What is a doctorate?
The doctorate is the highest university degree in the higher education system. It is generally prepared inthree years after a master's degree, as part of an original research activity, carried out within a laboratory, under the direction of one or more supervisors.
Doctoral students benefit from:
- a personalized support (Individual Follow-up Committee, scientific supervision),
- an access to cross-disciplinary training (communication, entrepreneurship, project management, etc.).),
- an integration into national and international scientific networks.
The doctorate culminates in the writing of a dissertation, which is defended at a public oral presentation before a jury of experts. Successful completion of this stage leads to the title of doctor, an internationally recognized diploma.
The Doctoral School Sciences, Engineering, Health (ED SIS - 488) is one of the 17 doctoral schools of the Doctoral College of the University of Lyon (UdL). Located in Saint-Étienne, it trains doctoral students in a variety of fields:
- Engineering sciences
- Information and communication sciences and technologies
- Health sciences and biology
- Applied mathematics
- Earth sciences
The ED SIS supports doctoral students at every stage of their career, from registration to defense, by offering adapted training, individualized follow-up and essential resources.

PhD students must follow several steps for their registration and re-registration each year. Find all the detailed information here:
Different funding solutions exist to support PhD students on their career path. Find out more about the options available:
Partner laboratories: LTDS and LIRIS
LTDS - Laboratoire de Tribologie et Dynamique des Systèmes:
The LTDS is a recognized multidisciplinary research laboratory, attached to several establishments including ENISE and Centrale Lyon. It specializes in the study of surfaces, materials, structural mechanics and dynamic systems.
Each year, it welcomes numerous PhD students in the following fields:
- Tribology, wear, friction
- Structural dynamics and vibration
- Materials and processes
- Multiphysics modeling and numerical simulation
Located on the Saint-Étienne and Écully campuses, the LTDS offers a high-level research environment with links to the industrial and international world.
LIRIS - Laboratoire d'InfoRmatique en Image et Systèmes d'information
The LIRIS is an interdisciplinary laboratory specializing in fundamental and applied computer science. It covers a broad spectrum of topics, including:
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning
- Image processing and computer vision
- Human-computer interaction
- Massive data, databases and information systems
The laboratory is attached to several institutions in Lyon and Saint-Etienne, including ENISE, and supports PhD students in projects with high technological impact.
The LIRIS encourages cross-sector collaborations and innovation, drawing on technical platforms and high-quality scientific supervision.
