A professor and researcher joins the French ISO GPS Standards Committee

Frédéric Cabanettes has devoted his research to surface engineering for more than twenty years, a key issue for many industrial sectors. His recent appointment to the French ISO GPS standardization committee recognizes the expertise he has developed at the intersection of academic research and industrial applications.

Expertise Built Over the Long Term

A lecturer at Centrale Lyon ENISE for over ten years, Frédéric Cabanettes has been conducting research on surface topography since 2005. His research focuses in particular on the influence of manufacturing processes on surface conditions, a key factor in the performance and durability of mechanical parts.

As part of the Laboratory of Tribology and System Dynamics (LTDS), he addresses a variety of issues: characterization and modeling of surface topographies resulting from additive or subtractive processes; the barrier role of surfaces against certain elements such as hydrogen; improvement of gear surfaces for electric motors; and the durability of antibacterial surfaces.

ISO GPS Standardization

Standardization is a strategic driver for industry and plays a foundational role. To this end, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)1 develops standards used worldwide to ensure product quality, compatibility, and performance. It is organized into national bodies, which are in turn divided into committees, each of which focuses on a specific topic.

Among these standards, the Geometric Product Specification (ISO GPS) enables the precise definition of the geometric requirements for parts and the methods for verifying them. These standards are essential for engineering, which must constantly evolve to incorporate scientific advances and new manufacturing techniques.

The French ISO GPS standardization committee is composed of experts from academia and industry. Led by the Union de Normalisation de la Mécanique (UNM)2, it helps drive the evolution of these standards and represents France’s perspective within international bodies.
